What is Playlet?
Playlet is a vertical short-drama app published by MicroShowtime Limited of Kowloon, Hong Kong, live in the US App Store since 4 December 2023. That makes it the earliest US launch among the apps added to our ranking this year. Its catalogue runs to urban drama, female-lead stories, contract marriage, divorce and betrayal, billionaire and CEO plots, werewolf fantasy and revenge.
The corporate arm, at playletmedia.com, describes MicroShowtime as the parent, headquartered in Hong Kong with offices in Guangzhou and El Monte, California, and claims in-house teams "from script creation to final editing" plus "dedicated filming teams across the globe". That is a fuller corporate disclosure than most rivals manage, and it is the foundation of the app's positioning.
Is Playlet AI-generated?
Nothing is published either way, and the marketing points away from it. The word AI does not appear in Playlet's App Store description, its Google Play description, playlet.com or playletmedia.com. Instead the iOS listing states: "Our shows are produced by Hollywood star teams, so you know you're getting top-notch quality."
We treat that as a marketing claim rather than a fact, for two reasons. No credible source substantiates "Hollywood star teams", and only about 13% of the catalogue is in English, so the great majority of what a US viewer scrolls past was not made by an American crew whatever the English tranche looks like.
The honest summary: Playlet publishes no AI statement, publishes an unverified human-production claim, and publishes no breakdown of which titles either claim covers. Our own assessment of the catalogue is mostly live-action, and like every entry in that column it is a judgement we date and revise, not a figure anyone has confirmed.

How much does Playlet cost to finish one season?
About $38 for a 70-episode season on coins, or $17.99 to $24.99 for a week of unlimited viewing if you can finish inside it. The US App Store lists 1,000 coins at $4.99, 2,000 at $9.99, 3,000 at $14.99 and 10,000 at $49.99, with a weekly pass at $17.99 to $24.99 and a monthly pass at $49.99.
The monthly pass is the outlier worth pointing at. At $49.99 it costs more than two weekly passes and roughly eight times a month of DramaBox, for a catalogue under a sixth the size. There is no arithmetic under which it is the right purchase on this app.

The price you are shown may not be the price you are shown an hour later. A Google Play reviewer records being quoted $24.99 a week after seeing a lower figure shortly before: "How someone could change price in an hour." We could not reproduce this on demand, but it is consistent with the cohort testing visible in the product list. Screenshot the price before you agree to it.
Why does Playlet score lowest of the top ten on billing?
Because the complaints are specific, repeated, and documented off the store as well as on it. Third-party analysis of recent one-star reviews finds roughly 56% concern subscription problems. The recurring pattern is not dissatisfaction with price; it is inability to stop paying.
The most serious version of the complaint is structural: reviewers report that the subscription never appears in their App Store subscription list, which makes the normal cancellation route unusable. One Play review reads: "they have taken multiple subscription payments out without my permission! A true subscription sends you emailed receipts, nope, this one silently takes money from people."

Against that, the aggregate ratings are respectable: 4.60 from 43,813 ratings on the US App Store and 4.5 from about 141,000 reviews on Google Play. Both numbers are true at once, and the gap between a good star average and a bad recent-review profile is the single most useful thing to understand about this category.

Who should install Playlet, and who should not?
Install it if you specifically want filmed rather than generated drama and you are willing to watch on the free tier. Playlet is the one app that positions itself against AI production, and if that is your reason for choosing, the free episodes cost nothing and tell you whether the catalogue suits you.
Do not subscribe unless you are comfortable disputing a charge. We do not say that about any other app in the top ten. The volume and specificity of cancellation complaints, and the reports of subscriptions invisible in the store list, make the exit route the thing to check before the entrance.

Through Apple or Google, and if the subscription is not listed there, go straight to a dispute. Playlet bills through the stores, so cancellation belongs in store settings, not in the app. Deleting the app stops nothing.
