Market context
Short-drama apps crossed 850 million global downloads and roughly $750 million in in-app-purchase revenue in Q1 2026 alone, according to Sensor Tower. That download figure is up about 140% year-over-year. AppFigures estimated $2.2 billion in cumulative US consumer spending through July 2026, after $1.15 billion for the full year 2025 — itself double 2024's $580 million.
| Metric | 2024 | 2025 | H1 2026 (est.) | YoY growth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US consumer spending | $580M | $1.15B | ~$2.2B (thru Jul) | ~100% (2024→2025) |
| Global IAP revenue (Q1) | — | — | ~$750M | +20% YoY |
| Global downloads (Q1) | — | — | 850M+ | +140% YoY |
| US downloads | 53.2M | 84.2M | 53M (Jan–Jul) | +58% (2024→2025) |
| Daily time per US user | — | ~35 min (Q4) | ~25 min (global avg, Apr) | +85% since Jan 2025 |
Sources: Sensor Tower "State of Short Drama Apps 2026"; AppFigures "Short Drama Apps in 2026"; Omdia (Q4 2025 time-per-user). US downloads for Jan–Jul 2026 nearly matched the same period in 2025, suggesting market maturation in the US while Southeast Asia, Latin America and India accelerated.
Southeast Asia (32% of global downloads), Latin America (23%) and India (22%) together account for more than three-quarters of global downloads, each growing by triple digits year-over-year. The US remains the dominant revenue market but its share is declining as apps localise pricing and content for emerging regions.
Store ratings vs our scores
Store ratings measure user satisfaction on the stores' own scale; our scores measure six specific axes we test ourselves — and the two do not correlate. DramaBox has a 4.8–4.9 store rating and our highest score (9.8). NetShort has a 4.2 Google Play rating with 100M+ installs and 1.9 million ratings — far more review volume than any app above it in our ranking. StoReel has a 4.8 on iOS but only a 3.2 on Google Play from 443 reviews, a split that likely reflects different user bases and app-store rating mechanics rather than a genuine quality gap.
| App | Our score | iOS rating | GP rating | GP ratings count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DramaBox | 9.8 | 4.8 | 4.9 | — |
| ReelShort | 9.5 | 4.7 | 4.2 | 1.65M |
| FlexTV | 9.2 | 4.7 | — | — |
| StoReel | 9.1 | 4.8 | 3.2 | 443 |
| StardustTV | 9.1 | — | 4.5 | ~800K |
| ShortMax | 9.0 | — | 4.4 | 2.1M |
| FlareFlow | 8.8 | — | — | — |
| DramaWave | 8.7 | — | 4.5 | 521K |
| GoodShort | 8.6 | — | 4.7 | 4.5M |
| VibeShort | 8.5 | — | — | — |
GoodShort has 4.5 million Google Play ratings — the highest volume in our ranking — with a 4.7 rating. Apple resets iOS ratings with major version updates, so iOS rating counts tend to be lower than Google Play for the same app.
Download leaders
ReelShort, ShortMax and NetShort each show 100M+ cumulative Google Play installs as of October 2026. ReelShort's third-party estimate is roughly 236 million total Android downloads. DramaBox and DramaWave each show 50M+ on Google Play. NetShort is adding about 8.3 million installs per month, according to AppGoblin.
| App | GP install bracket | Third-party estimate | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | 100M+ | ~236M total Android | TechDevNotes |
| ShortMax | 100M+ | — | Google Play / AppBrain |
| NetShort | 100M+ | ~152M total (+8.3M/mo) | AppGoblin |
| DramaBox | 50M+ | ~3M (App Store est.) | TheAppLaunchpad (iOS) |
| DramaWave | 50M+ | ~94M total Android | TechDevNotes |
| StardustTV | 10M+ | ~30M (AppBrain) | AppBrain |
| FlexTV | 10M+ | — | Google Play |
| GoodShort | 10M+ | — | Google Play |
Google Play install brackets are cumulative lifetime installs, not monthly active users. Third-party estimates are from the cited trackers and should be treated as approximations. DramaBox's iOS-only estimate of ~3M reflects App Store downloads only; its Google Play bracket of 50M+ is the larger figure. DramaBox reported roughly 90 million registered users and about 50 million monthly active users globally.
Price-tier comparison
AI drama app weekly subscription prices range from $4.99 to $34.99 across the 23 ranked apps as of October 8, 2026. DramaBox ($5.99), VibeShort ($4.99) and GoodShort ($5.99) sit at the bottom of the range. FlexTV ($29.99), Sereal ($12.99–34.99) and StoReel ($9.99–29.99) sit at the top. Every app publishes a US price in its store listing — as of this snapshot, not one of the 23 has unpublished US pricing.
| Price tier | Apps | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Under $7/wk | VibeShort ($4.99), DramaBox (~$5.99), GoodShort ($5.99) | 3 |
| $7–14.99/wk | DramaWave ($7.99), StoReel ($9.99), StarShort ($9.99), TouchShort ($9.99), ShortMax (~$9.99), FlickReels ($12.99), Sereal ($12.99), KaloTV ($14.99), MoboDrama ($14.99), StardustTV ($14.99) | 10 |
| $15–19.99/wk | TopShort ($15.99), Playlet ($17.99), ReelShort (~$19.99), NetShort ($19.99), FlareFlow ($19.99) | 5 |
| $20+/wk | FlexTV ($29.99) | 1 |
| Coins only (no sub) | SagaBox ($2.69+), YourChannel ($3.99+), ShortPeak ($4.79+), MyMuse ($9.99+) | 4 |
Entry price is the lowest weekly (or one-off for coin-only apps) price published in the US store listing. Many apps offer multiple tiers; the upper end is documented in our full reviews. Prices change with region, device and promotion — the number the app quotes you at checkout is the binding one.
AI-production status
AI drama apps split into six categories by how much of their catalogue appears to be AI-produced, based on our editorial review. No app publishes what share of its library is AI-made, and no independent dataset measures it. These are our classifications.
| Classification | Apps | Count |
|---|---|---|
| AI-native | StoReel, MyMuse, SagaBox, ShortPeak | 4 |
| AI-native (claimed) | MoboDrama | 1 |
| AI-first production | FlexTV | 1 |
| Mixed catalogue | DramaBox, StardustTV, ShortMax, FlareFlow, DramaWave, VibeShort, FlickReels | 7 |
| Mostly live-action | ReelShort, GoodShort, Playlet, NetShort | 4 |
| Mostly licensed | Sereal | 1 |
| Undetermined | KaloTV, TopShort, StarShort, TouchShort, YourChannel | 5 |
Our classification criteria are documented on the how we test page. "AI-native" means the platform's catalogue is predominantly AI-produced. "Mixed catalogue" means a visible portion is AI-produced alongside live-action titles. "Undetermined" means we could not establish the production method from public information.
How we compiled this
AI drama store snapshot data comes from the US App Store, Google Play and five third-party trackers, all checked on the date shown in the headline. We record what the stores publish: rating, rating count and install bracket (Google Play only). For download estimates beyond the bracket, we cite the tracker. We do not estimate downloads ourselves.
The prices recorded are the lowest published entry price visible in the US store listing — typically the cheapest weekly subscription or coin pack. Our six-axis scores are wholly separate from store ratings and are not updated in this snapshot; they change only when we re-test an app. The AI-production classification is our editorial judgement, updated when evidence changes.
This is the first monthly snapshot. Future snapshots will appear as dated sections below, and we will add month-over-month change columns once two or more snapshots exist.
Frequently asked questions
How often is the AI drama store snapshot updated?
We publish a new snapshot on the first or second week of every month. Each snapshot records the store ratings, estimated downloads and published prices that were visible on the App Store and Google Play at that date. Historical snapshots remain on this page for month-over-month comparison.
Where do the download estimates come from?
Google Play shows download brackets (10M+, 50M+, 100M+) directly on each listing. Finer estimates come from third-party trackers such as Sensor Tower, AppFigures, AppBrain and AppGoblin; we note the source beside every figure. Apple does not publish download counts, so iOS figures are third-party estimates where available.
Why do some apps show no download figure?
Web-only platforms like SagaBox and ShortPeak have no App Store or Google Play listing, so there is no public download count. Some newer or smaller apps also lack reliable third-party estimates. We leave the cell empty rather than guess.
What does the AI-status column mean?
It records our editorial classification of how much of each app's catalogue appears to be AI-produced: AI-native, AI-first, mixed catalogue, mostly live-action, mostly licensed, or undetermined. The classifications and their criteria are explained on our how-we-test page.
Do store ratings affect your scores?
No. Our six-axis scores are based entirely on our own testing: cost, catalogue, production quality, free tier, device coverage and billing transparency. Store ratings reflect a different audience and different criteria. We publish them here as context, not as an input to our scoring.
How big is the short-drama app market in 2026?
Sensor Tower estimated over 850 million global downloads and about $750 million in in-app purchase revenue in Q1 2026 alone. AppFigures estimated $2.2 billion in US consumer spending through July 2026. The category grew roughly 100–140% year-over-year in both downloads and revenue through mid-2026.
Which app has the most downloads?
By Google Play install count as of October 2026, ReelShort, ShortMax and NetShort each show 100M+ installs. DramaBox and DramaWave each show 50M+. These are cumulative lifetime installs, not monthly active users.
Can I compare this month's snapshot with last month?
This is the first snapshot (October 2026). Future months will appear as separate sections on this page, and we will add month-over-month change columns once two or more snapshots exist.
Where can I read the full review of each app?
Our reviews page has the complete ranking and links to each full review. Thirteen of the twenty-three ranked apps have full reviews so far; the rest are scored and ranked but their full reviews are in progress.
What is the cheapest AI drama app right now?
DramaBox has the lowest published entry price at about $5.99 per week for unlimited viewing. VibeShort and GoodShort also start at $4.99–5.99 per week. Prices change with region, device and promotion, so always check the price the app quotes you at checkout.
Do any apps offer truly free viewing?
Most apps offer free opening episodes — typically the first 5 to 10 per series. DramaBox, ShortMax and StardustTV have the most generous free tiers: DramaBox offers daily free episodes plus ad-unlocks, ShortMax offers reward coins, and StardustTV lets you play full series free in a browser with ads.
How reliable are third-party download estimates?
Third-party estimates from firms like Sensor Tower, AppFigures and AppBrain are industry-standard approximations. They are based on statistical sampling and modelling, not on data the stores publish. Google Play's own install brackets (10M+, 50M+, 100M+) are the most reliable Android figures. Apple publishes no download counts at all. We cite the source for every estimate and recommend treating the figures as order-of-magnitude guides rather than exact counts.
Why do iOS and Google Play ratings differ?
Different user bases rate differently. iOS ratings tend to skew higher partly because Apple resets ratings with each major version update, dropping old low-star reviews. Google Play accumulates lifetime ratings. The review volume also differs: Google Play often has ten to fifty times more ratings than the App Store for the same app.
Which AI drama app grew fastest recently?
In the May 2026 Insightrackr report, StardustTV downloads grew 102% month-over-month. VibeShort, launched in February 2026, also grew rapidly in its first months. Among revenue leaders, NetShort moved to No. 1 globally in May 2026 with 12% month-over-month revenue growth. These are short-term trends and can shift month to month.
