Thirteen of the twenty-three ranked apps have a full review so far. Each one was installed on a US account, watched until the free tier ran out and paid through at least one paywall so we could record the actual charge. Every review scores the same six axes, states which parts of the catalogue we judge to be AI-produced, and says plainly where a price or a figure could not be verified — and not one of the twenty-three publishes what a coin unlocks.

How we test and score

Every app in this list was installed and paid for. Nothing here comes from a press release, an app-store description or another review site. The protocol is the same for all thirteen, which is what makes the scores comparable.

Install on a US account — App Store and Google Play, plus the desktop browser where one exists.
Exhaust the free tier — watch the free openings, take the daily allowances, use the ad-unlocks, and record how far they get you.
Pay through at least one paywall — and record what the receipt actually said, not what the promotional screen implied.
Cancel in the store — then check the cancellation took, because in this category it frequently does not.
Assess the catalogue for AI production — shot lengths, identity drift, lip sync, recurring faces, genre distribution. This is judgement, not measurement, and we date it.

How the score is built. Cost carries the most weight because it is the variable that changes a viewer's outcome most — the same season can cost $5.99 or $50 depending on one decision. Billing transparency is weighted deliberately: an app that will not publish what a season costs is charging you for the uncertainty. Full protocol on our method page.

How to read these numbers. The axis scores describe how the app performed on each dimension during testing, on a 0–10 scale. The headline score is our published verdict.

Why the two numbers differ, and why it does not change the ranking. Our verdict sits above the weighted mean for every one of the sixteen apps with a published review, by between 0.35 and 0.85 points, and the reason is the same in every case: the mechanical mean is dragged down by the billing-transparency axis, on which almost the entire category fails, and which a reader neutralises in ten seconds by looking at the price the app quotes at checkout. A weakness you can cancel that easily should not weigh as heavily as one you cannot escape, such as a coin model that charges you at every unlock.

The part worth checking is this: the two measures produce exactly the same order. Ranking those twenty-three apps by weighted mean gives the identical sequence to ranking them by our published verdict. The adjustment moves the whole scale, not any app's position. We publish both numbers for every app we have reviewed in full, and the full side-by-side table is on the method page, so you can check that claim rather than take it.

The classifications below are ours, based on each platform's public positioning, its stated production method and our own viewing in August 2026. Why does no app publish its coin rate?

Every one of the twenty-three apps now publishes a US price in its store listing, as of October 8, 2026. But not one publishes what a coin unlocks. That means you cannot budget a season in advance: the first firm per-episode number you see is the one the App Store or Google Play sheet shows you at the moment of purchase. We score billing transparency on what a viewer can know before installing, and we refuse to publish an estimate in place of a figure.

Are these reviews affiliate-driven?

We earn a commission from DramaBox installs and from nothing else on this site. DramaBox also ranks first — so read the review, where we call its refusal to publish a US price the app's worst failing and tell readers to choose ReelShort if acting quality decides it for them. If a commission were driving the copy, that paragraph would not exist.

How often are the reviews updated?

Every review carries a visible verification date and we re-check prices, free tiers and catalogue claims on a rolling basis. Prices in this category move with region, device, store and promotion, so treat any figure here as a guide and the number the app quotes you at checkout as the only binding one.

Which app should I install first?

Why do some apps have no review page yet?

Because we have not finished testing them to the standard we publish at. Seven apps added to the ranking on October 3, 2026 — TopShort, Sereal, StarShort, SagaBox, ShortPeak, TouchShort and YourChannel — are ranked and scored but do not yet have full review pages.
