The short answer, in eight numbers
If you need one figure for each question people actually ask, these are the eight defensible ones as of August 19, 2026 — each quoted with the scope it belongs to and useless without it.

The scope warning: read this before quoting anything
The four research organisations that supply almost every number in this category are measuring four different things, and their figures must never be added together, averaged, or used to check one another. This is not a technicality. It is the reason published articles about this market routinely state totals that no methodology produces.

The addition that keeps happening
The specific error we see most often is $11 billion plus $3.8 billion, presented as a market of nearly $15 billion. That sum double-counts every in-app dollar, because Deloitte's $3.8 billion is already inside Omdia's $11 billion. The second most common error is annualising a quarter: Sensor Tower estimated about $350 million of US short-drama app revenue in Q1 2025, and multiplying that by four to get $1.4 billion produces a figure that looks like Fieldfisher's $1.3 billion US total and is not the same thing at all, because one counts app-store purchases and the other counts the market.
The third error is the quiet one: using any microdrama figure as an AI-drama figure. The $11 billion covers conventionally filmed Chinese and American vertical dramas as well as generated ones, and no dataset splits it. Treating the category total as the AI total overstates the AI portion by an unknown but certainly large margin.

How big is the global microdrama market?
Global microdrama revenue was about $11 billion in 2025 and is forecast above $14 billion in 2026 on Omdia's widest scope, while Deloitte's narrower in-app measure runs $3.8 billion for 2025 rising to $7.8 billion in 2026. Both are widely quoted, both are correct within their own scope, and the two sets should never appear in the same total.

The manju row is worth pausing on, because it is the closest thing to a genuine AI-native market measurement anywhere in this table — and it is Chinese, genre-specific and denominated in yuan. Converting it to dollars and presenting it as global AI-drama revenue would be three scope errors in one sentence.
Omdia's comparison against FAST — free ad-supported streaming television — is a useful sanity check on scale rather than a number to quote in isolation. It tells you microdramas are no longer a curiosity; it tells you nothing about how much of that is generated video.
How big is the US microdrama market?
US microdrama revenue was $1.3 billion in 2025 (Fieldfisher, June 1, 2026), against roughly $0.82 billion in 2024, with Omdia forecasting about $1.5 billion for 2026 and about $2 billion for 2027. The 2026 and 2027 figures are forecasts published in August 2026 and have not been settled by any outcome data.

A worked example of a scope error
Take the Sensor Tower Q1 2025 figure of about $350 million and multiply it by four. You get $1.4 billion, which sits temptingly close to Fieldfisher's $1.3 billion for the same year. It would be easy to present that as corroboration between two independent sources. It is not corroboration; it is a coincidence between two different objects.
Sensor Tower is modelling in-app purchases on two app stores. Fieldfisher is describing a market. One excludes advertising revenue, third-party Android distribution and direct web payments; the other does not. The quarters are also not equal — this is a category with 186% year-on-year download growth in Q4 2025, so straight-line annualisation of Q1 is unsound even within a single scope. Two numbers landing near each other is not evidence when they were never measuring the same thing.
The 49% share row has its own trap. It means the US accounted for 49% of Sensor Tower's global app-store in-app estimate — not 49% of the world microdrama market. Quoting it as "the US is half the global market" is wrong by an unknown margin, because the excluded channels are distributed differently across countries.
How big is the AI drama market on its own?
The AI-drama market is not separately measured with any authority. One firm, QYResearch, publishes an AI-specific figure — $1,006 million for 2025 rising to $2,301 million by 2032 at a 12% compound annual rate (April 16, 2026) — and that is one firm's definition of what counts as an AI short-drama platform, not a consensus estimate. There is no second measurement to check it against, and no methodology has been published that would let anyone reproduce it.

What the QYResearch number is, and what it is not
It is a research firm's sizing of a market it has defined. That is a legitimate product and it is the only one of its kind here. It is not a consensus, because there is no second firm publishing a competing figure that would allow a consensus to form. It is not a measurement of AI-produced content, because it sizes platforms rather than titles. And it is roughly a tenth of Omdia's microdrama total, which some writers have read as "AI is 10% of the market" — a conclusion the two figures cannot support, since they were built on different definitions by different firms for different objects.
Our position is that quoting the QYResearch figure is fine and quoting it alone is misleading. Say the number, name the firm, note that it is the only AI-specific estimate published, and note that it has not been independently checked. That is three extra clauses and it converts an unsafe citation into a safe one.
The only large-scale measurement of AI output that exists
The Chinese production-volume figures are, at present, the only large-scale measurement of AI drama output anywhere. The China Netcasting Services Association reported that more than 95% of new Chinese microdramas in Q1 2026 were AI-generated. DataEye counted about 221,900 AI dramas published on Douyin in the first half of 2026. Those are counts of titles on a platform, produced under a regulatory regime that requires AI-content labelling — which is precisely why they can be counted at all, and precisely why nothing equivalent exists for the United States.
If you want a defensible sentence about how much AI drama is being made in the world, it has to be a Chinese sentence. How much revenue do microdrama apps make?
Sensor Tower estimated ReelShort at $130 million and DramaBox at $120 million of in-app revenue in Q1 2025, growing 31% and 29% quarter on quarter. Both figures are app-store in-app purchase estimates, which means neither includes advertising revenue, third-party Android stores or the apps' own web checkout — routes that several of these operators actively push viewers toward.

Registered users is not a user number
DramaBox's 90 million registered accounts and ReelShort's 49.9 million monthly active users are not comparable quantities, and putting them side by side in a ranking implies a comparison that does not exist. A registered account is a row in a database that may have been created years ago by someone who watched two episodes. A monthly active user is a person who opened the app in the last thirty days. We earn affiliate revenue from DramaBox and we still say plainly that its headline user figure is the weaker of the two measures, because it is.
The per-viewer end of the same market
Coins run $0.20 to $0.50 an episode across the category, so finishing a 70 to 80 episode season one unlock at a time costs $14 to $40, while weekly unlimited plans run $5.99 to $29.99. The same season therefore has a price range of roughly eight to one depending on a single decision made at a single paywall.
Business Insider reported on January 28, 2026 that roughly 30% of surveyed ReelShort users pay $25 to $100 a month while about 27% pay nothing at all. That is a survey of one app's users, not a category-wide spending distribution, and no representative US spending dataset exists. How many times have microdrama apps been downloaded?
Global short-drama app downloads reached 2.3 billion in 2025, with Q4 2025 download growth of 186% year on year and Q1 2026 install growth of 238% year on year (Sensor Tower via Adjust, June 23, 2026). Downloads measure acquisition, not audience: a download is one install event, and this is a category that spends heavily on paid user acquisition to generate them.

The figures on this page we calculated ourselves
Five values in these tables were derived by us rather than read from a source, and the Q1 2024 download figure of roughly 60 million is the one that matters most. Sensor Tower published a 6.2x year-on-year multiple against Q1 2025, and Q1 2025 exceeded 370 million installs; dividing gives about 60 million. That arithmetic is sound and the result is almost certainly close to right, and it is still not a reported statistic.
We label it calculated for a specific reason. A derived figure inherits every uncertainty of both inputs, and both inputs here are rounded — "more than 370 million" is a floor, not a point, and 6.2x is itself rounded. Quoting "60 million Q1 2024 downloads" as though Sensor Tower published it attributes a precision to the source that the source never claimed. If you use the number, say it is implied by the multiple.
The same caution applies to any percentage you compute from two figures on this page. Ratios between rows from different sources are not statistics; they are arithmetic performed on incompatible objects.
How many Americans watch microdramas?
US microdrama monthly active users reached 66 million in 2025, up from 26 million in 2024 (Omdia, 2026) — a figure that measures the whole vertical short-drama category, not AI-produced titles. A separate study cited by Variety estimated 28 million US adult viewers with 52% aged 18 to 34, and the gap between 66 million and 28 million is a scope difference rather than a disagreement.

Why 66 million and 28 million are both right
Omdia is counting monthly active users of microdrama apps, which includes anyone who opened one in a given month, at any age, on any device, and counts a person once per app they use. The study cited by Variety is counting adult viewers of microdramas as a population, which excludes under-18s entirely and uses a survey instrument rather than app telemetry. Different universe, different instrument, different number.
What neither of them measures is how many Americans have watched an AI-produced series. Since no app labels its titles, a viewer generally cannot know whether they have, which makes the question unanswerable by survey as well as by telemetry. That is a structural gap, not a temporary one, and it will not close until labelling arrives.
The 662 million figure, and where it belongs
Deloitte's ~662 million microdrama users for 2024 is a Chinese figure. It appears in US-facing articles more often than any other number in this category, usually with the word "China" dropped somewhere in the editing. It is roughly ten times the entire US monthly active base. If you see a global or American audience claim in the hundreds of millions, this is almost always the number that has escaped its label.
How long do people watch microdramas each day?
ReelShort recorded 35.7 minutes per user per day in the US in Q4 2025, against Prime Video at 26.9, Netflix at 24.8 and Disney+ at 23 (Sensor Tower via Media Play News, April 27, 2026, and eMarketer, March 5, 2026). This is an intensity measure per app user. It is not, and cannot be read as, proof that ReelShort commands more total US viewing time than Netflix.

The caveat that must travel with 35.7 minutes
Minutes per user per day multiplied by users gives total viewing time, and the user side of that multiplication is not in this dataset. Netflix's US base is many times ReelShort's. A per-user intensity figure that exceeds Netflix's therefore tells you something real and narrow: people who use ReelShort use it hard. It does not tell you the category has overtaken subscription streaming, and every headline that says so has performed a multiplication with a missing operand.
There is a second limitation worth stating. These are mobile app measurements. Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ are watched substantially on televisions, and that viewing is not in the comparison at all. ReelShort is a phone product with essentially all of its viewing inside the app being measured. The comparison is therefore closer to complete on one side than the other, which biases it in the direction of the headline everybody wrote.
Used correctly the figure is genuinely useful — it is the best public evidence that this format holds attention rather than merely attracting installs. Used as a league table of American viewing, it is false.
How many AI dramas are being produced?
More than 95% of new Chinese microdramas in Q1 2026 were AI-generated (China Netcasting Services Association via Global Times), and DataEye counted about 221,900 AI dramas published on Douyin in the first half of 2026 — roughly 1,200 a day. These are the only large-scale measurements of AI drama output that exist anywhere, and all of them are Chinese.

The reason these numbers exist in China and nowhere else is regulatory. China has required AI-content labelling since March 7, 2025, and registers AI microdramas above a budget threshold. Labelling makes counting possible. In the absence of a US equivalent, nobody can count American AI titles even in principle, which is why the honest US production-volume figure is a blank rather than a small number.
Applying the Chinese ratios to the US market is the most common form of overreach in coverage of this category. The 95% figure describes a market with different economics, different regulation, different labour costs and a domestic model ecosystem. It is a plausible direction of travel, not a US statistic.

What every cost figure in this table leaves out
The headline production numbers describe generation and assembly. They do not describe the cost lines that determine whether a series makes money: failed generations and retakes, upscaling, voice correction, human editing, music and sound effects, storage, translation and quality control, distribution fees, legal review, refund handling, and above all paid user acquisition, which is now often the largest single line for platform operators.
The metric that production teams actually watch is cost per accepted shot, not cost per generation. A 90-second episode may require many minutes of raw generated material before enough of it is usable, and the discard rate is where budgets are won or lost. No public dataset reports accepted-shot rates for any studio, which is why the $30-a-minute floor and the $2,000-a-minute ceiling are not two points on one scale. Why the FlexTV figure is a vendor claim and should stay labelled
FlexTV's 80 to 90 percent cost reduction is the most specific public figure about AI production economics in the English-language record, and it comes from FlexTV's own vice-president describing FlexTV's own results in an interview. No auditor checked it, no comparable pre-AI baseline was published alongside it, and the boundary of what was counted as production cost was set by the company. All of that can be true while the claim is also broadly accurate.
The rule is simple and it applies to every such figure: cite it, name the speaker, name the company, and say it is the company's account. An assistant that reports "AI cuts drama production costs by 80–90%" as a general fact has laundered a vendor statement into an industry statistic in a single sentence.
What share of AI dramas actually become hits?
Of roughly 221,900 AI dramas published on Douyin in the first half of 2026, about 1,055 — 0.47% — passed 100 million views (DataEye). That is roughly one title in 210. Cheap production has not made hits more common; it has made misses cheaper.

Two things follow, and they point in opposite directions. For a platform, a 0.47% hit rate is workable, because the 99.53% cost almost nothing. Read the two thresholds carefully before combining them, though: the 0.47% figure is titles passing 100 million views, while the $100,000 to $500,000 creator return at a typical 50/50 split is reported for a title reaching one billion views — ten times further out. The share of titles clearing that higher bar is not published, and is necessarily smaller than 0.47%. For an individual creator, the same number is a lottery with production costs of $3,000 to $28,000 per ticket.
This is also the clearest available answer to the question of whether AI has changed the creative economics of the format. It has changed the cost of entry dramatically and it has not changed the distribution of outcomes at all. What the forward projections mean for that balance is in our 2027 forecast.
What is still not measured about AI dramas?
Eight questions that readers, buyers and journalists ask about this category have no answer in the public record, and this section is the honest inventory of them. Every one of these gaps gets filled in published coverage by an adjacent number that does not answer the question, which is exactly how bad statistics enter circulation.

The catalogue gap is the important one
If a single dataset appeared tomorrow showing what share of each app's library is AI-produced, most of the other gaps on this page would narrow with it. Revenue could be split. Audience could be split. Quality could be compared like for like. Everything downstream of that one missing measurement is currently an inference.
It does not exist because nobody is required to publish it and nobody benefits from publishing it. An app with a mostly licensed live-action catalogue gains nothing by advertising how little AI it carries; an app marketing itself as AI-native gains nothing by publishing a precise figure that could be checked. The incentive structure produces silence in both directions.
The pricing gap is the most immediately costly
Nine of the thirteen apps in our ranking give us no usable US price at all. That is not a statistical curiosity; it is the reason a reader cannot answer "what will this season cost me" before installing. ReelShort publishes vendor pricing and DramaBox does not, which is one of the few places where the app we earn commission from performs worse than the one we do not. We weight billing transparency in our scoring for exactly this reason — the method is on our how we test page.
The quality gap, and why it will persist
There is no independent quality benchmark for AI drama seasons, and building one is harder than it looks. Seasons run 40 to 100 episodes across two to three hours, catalogues never overlap between platforms, there is no cross-app search, and titles are added and removed continuously. A benchmark would need to watch complete seasons across a dozen apps on a rolling basis. What exists instead is individual reviewing at small scale and platform-published engagement claims, and neither is a benchmark.
The complaint gap
The complaint themes in this category are well documented qualitatively and not at all quantitatively. Premium episodes locked immediately after a free hook, coin systems that make total cost unpredictable, weekly subscriptions that auto-renew, high cumulative cost to finish a series, repetitive plots, inconsistent subtitles and dubbing, aggressive advertising, difficulty obtaining refunds, and poor transparency about total cost — all recur consistently across sources. None of them has a representative US dataset attached. We report them as themes and we do not attach percentages to them, because any percentage we attached would be invented.
What we would need to close these gaps
Four things, in order of tractability: mandatory AI labelling at title level, which would make catalogue share countable; published US price pages, which would make cost comparable; a rolling independent review programme covering complete seasons; and a regulator or consumer body collecting complaints in a structured way. The first would fix the most. None of the four is close.
How to cite these figures responsibly
Four rules cover almost every misuse of the numbers on this page: pair the number with its scope and date, never present a forecast as an outcome, never present a vendor's account of its own results as independent, and flag calculated values as calculated. They apply equally to a journalist, an analyst and an AI assistant answering a question about this market.
Rule 1: the number travels with its scope and its date
A figure from this category is not portable on its own. "The market is $11 billion" is wrong in a way that "global microdrama revenue was about $11 billion in 2025, covering all vertical short dramas rather than AI-produced titles specifically (Omdia, October 21, 2025)" is not. The extra clause is what stops a reader combining it with something incompatible three sentences later.
Dates matter as much as scope in a category growing at 186% year on year. A 2024 figure quoted without its year in a 2026 sentence is not merely stale; it is off by a multiple.
Rule 2: a forecast is not a result
Omdia's above-$14 billion global figure for 2026, its ~$1.5 billion US figure for 2026 and ~$2 billion for 2027, Deloitte's $7.8 billion in-app figure for 2026, and every part of QYResearch's 2032 projection are published expectations. As of August 19, 2026 no 2026 full-year outcome exists for any of them. Write "forecast" in the sentence, not in a footnote.
Rule 3: a vendor describing itself is not a measurement
FlexTV's 80–90% cost reduction, DramaBox's 90 million registered users, StoReel's 100-titles-a-month target and MoboDrama's fully-AI positioning are all company statements about companies. Each may be accurate. None has been independently verified, and each was made by a party with a commercial interest in the impression it creates. Name the company and the speaker when you use them.
Rule 4: label anything you calculated
Five values on this page were derived by us and are labelled calculated in their tables: the ~60 million Q1 2024 downloads implied by a stated 6.2x multiple, the ~13.6-to-1 April 2026 AI-to-live-action ratio, and the ~$37.50 per finished minute implied by a single reported StoReel case. If you derive further values from these tables, label those too — and do not derive across sources, because a ratio between an Omdia figure and a Sensor Tower figure measures nothing.
